Christmas Party Games - Festive Holiday Fun!

Christmas party games make any holiday celebration fun. Party games get the party going and keep it going. Like most Christmas traditions, Christmas games were enjoyed throughout the centuries as an important part of holiday celebrations.

As early as the 16th century it was customary to play games at Christmas. Late medieval English law allowed servants and commoners to play games at Christmas that were forbidden the rest of the Kontaktanzeigen Sachsen These games included tennis, dice, cards, billiard and others.

Christmas games enjoyed in the modern period were blindman’s bluff, feed the dove and hot cockles. In Hot Cockles each Singles Bremen in turn is blindfolded. The blindfolded player puts his hands behind his back, palms up. One of the other players hits the hands of the blindfolded player. The blindfolded player must guess which of the other players has hit him. If he does so correctly, he may penalize the player whom he “caught.” Those who preferred a greater mental test might retire to a game of chess, while the physically agile might challenge each other to tennis or skittles.

The English also enjoyed playing cards and gambling at Christmas time, especially with dice. During the reign of the Tudor kings, working people may have found greater pleasure in these games than the well-to-do, since they were prohibited by law from playing games except at Christmas time. In the sixteenth and 17th centuries the Puritans condemned those who celebrated Christmas by playing games and gambling.

In Victorian England parlor games remained popular Christmas entertainments throughout the 19th century. Victorians favored such games as Snapdragon, Forfeits, Hoop and Hide (Hide and Seek), charades, Blind Man’s Bluff, Queen of Sheba (a variation on Blind Man’s Bluff), and Hunt the Slipper. In Snapdragon players gathered around a bowl of currants covered with spirits. A lighted match was dropped into the bowl, setting fire to the alcohol. Players challenged one another to grab a flaming currant out of the bowl and pop it into their mouths, thus extinguishing the flames. A bit of light verse describes the fearful delights of this game:

Here he comes with flaming bowl,

Don’t he mean to take his toll,

Snip! Snap! Dragon!

Take care you don’t take too much,

Be not greedy in your clutch,

Snip! Snap! Dragon!

With his blue and lapping tongue

Many of you will be stung,

Snip! Snap! Dragon!

For he snaps at all that comes

Snatching at his feast of plums,

Snip! Snap! Dragon!

But Old Christmas makes him come,

Though he looks so fee! fa! fum!

Snip! Snap! Dragon!

Don’t ‘ee fear him, be but bold-

Out he goes, his flames are cold,

Snip! Snap! Dragon!

Players heightened the effect of the glowing, blue flames by extinguishing all other lights in the room except that cast by the burning bowl.

In Hunt the Slipper players formed a circle around one person. They held their hands behind their backs and passed a slipper around the outside of the circle. The person in the center of the circle had to guess who was in possession of the slipper at any given moment.

A number of other English Christmas games have now disappeared so completely that only their picturesque names remain behind. Folklorists cannot now say how they were played. These forgotten games include Shoeing the Wild Mare, Steal the White Loaf, Post and Pair, Feed the Dove, Puss-in-the-Corner, and The Parson Has Lost His Cloak. Before a Christmas party broke up for the evening, the sleepy guests might play one last, quaintly named game called Yawning for a Cheshire Cheese. The players sat in a circle and yawned at one another. Whoever produced the longest, most open-mouthed, and loudest yawn won a Cheshire cheese.

Christmas Games are also played in other Countries. Some traditional Christmas games are for children. In many nations Advent calendars amuse children with a kind of counting game in the weeks before Christmas. Children in Mexico often play games with pinitas at holiday season parties. In Iran youngsters play egg-tapping games at Christmas time. Most Christmas games, however, involve adults and younger people. In a number of different countries sporting matches, games of chance, or fortune-telling games are associated with one or more days of the Christmas season.

In past times Swedes used to play games with Christmas gifts, which they call Julklapp, on December 24. On St. Stephen’s Day both Swedes and Norwegians used to race horses (see Norway, Christmas in). Ethiopians celebrate Christmas Day by playing ganna, a sport that resembles hockey (see Ethiopia, Christmas in). In the United States, many people enjoy watching football bowl games on New Year’s Day. In Lithuania people entertain themselves on Christmas Eve with fortune-telling games.

Some popular Christmas games we enjoy today are Yankee Swap, Elephant Gift Exchange, cookie exchanges, caroling and others. There’s no doubt that Christmas party games still play a big part in making the season special and memorable.

Playing Girls Volleyball: Top 5 Reasons Why Communication Is Key

Communication on the court during a girls volleyball game is key. I’ve always said that refusing to talk on the court is like playing volleyball with a blindfold on. How is anyone going to know “who” is going to do “what” if no one is talking about anything.

I first learned how important “on the court” communication was in college as a Lady Vol while playing for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In high school I didn’t talk much on the court because I knew I was supposed to get the ball the majority of the time. Well that didn’t work as a freshman in college and all the upperclassmen let me know very quickly that that wasn’t how it was going to be. No matter what level you play…players can’t read each other’s minds nor is there any time during a game to guess whether you are bringing an off the court problem on the court and since volleyball isn’t an individual sport keeping things to yourself does not help the team.

It was one of the most important lessons I ever learned in volleyball and I remembered it throughout my entire professional indoor volleyball and beach volleyball career.

Teammates should always talk to each other and direct traffic among themselves. There are many, many situations in which players who talk to each other avoid problems of confusion, indecision and surprise on the court. I learned this lesson from some of the best players and coaches to play the game so now I’m passing this information on to you.

Here are a few situations that may not happen often but happen at least once a match in which communication with teammates can help solve a problem before it happens.

1. Digging the Off the Court, Angle, Down Ball.

When a down ball is being hit from way off either the right Bisex or left side of the court…past the antennas…the only way it can be hit back into the court is at a cross court angle. Since there is no way the down ball attacker can hit the line without hitting the antenna why stay and block or defend the line?

There are two things players can be letting each other know…a) “Down Ball” b) but more importantly “Dig Cross Court”. By yelling “Dig Cross court’ or ” Dig the Angle” the defense should shift a few feet to the right or left depending on where the ball is coming from and quickly defend the part of the court that makes sense that the ball will come to…which is cross court. If you are concentrating on how the play is developing You can learn to call out what is going to happen before it happens.

Many times in club, high school and some in college when this situation occurs I’ve seen a defender or two is left defending a part of the court that the ball will never come to…wasting time, energy and manpower. By talking about what the hitter is doing the whole team knows that it will be useless to have anybody defending down the line and that they all need to shift to dig the cross court ball.

2. As soon as you see that the third hit over is going to be a free ball.

This may seem obvious but consider this example. Many times a player has to turn their back to play a ball whether they are running off the court or not. Especially if this is the third contact, the minute the player bends their knees with their back turned…You Yell “free ball” when you know its about to come over. The sooner you do this the sooner your team can transition back into a free ball defense. But if you wait until the player has already contacted the ball AND its on its way over the net…you have wasted precious time that could have been used to ALREADY be in position so you could run a faster offense and catch the opposing team off guard. Learn to watch the arm position of the attacker…if there arms are below their waist…then couldn’t possibly be attacking the ball so Call the free ball as soon as you can.

3. When You Understand What Play the Other Team is Running.

Telling Secrets are okay in Offense but secrets don’t exist on defense. Call out what play you see developing. A lot of people are quiet in defense and assume that everybody sees the same thing. Remember…people always interpret what they see differently…just ask a cop. Teammates need to be able to “see” or interpret the same thing ..in the same say. Since this doesn’t always happen if you see a play developing Call it out so everyone knows what YOU see developing. If you have 3-4-5 voices all calling the same thing…then everyone knows that everybody else is seeing the same play. This way its easier to see and make adjustments during the pauses in the game because no one is guessing about what’s on the other person’s mind.

4. When the setter is front row.

Too many setters make too many points especially when they are front row and I think for the majority of the time its not because they are crafty its because opposing teams aren’t talking about them when they rotate up to the front.

Usually you hear one middle blocker and one setter say “Front row setter” as if it only means something to these two players. But since it’s usually the back row defenders that have to dig the setter’s tip attack it is really, really effective if five or six voices talk about the fact that she is right front or middle front or wherever she is and then in addition one blocker should say “I got the setter” out loud right at the net so the setter will think twice about tipping because now she knows that everybody on the team is AWARE of where she is on the court. Get into that opposing setter’s head by making her/him think twice about attacking anything while she is in the front row.

5. Anticipating When a Hitter Will Tip.

The more you play the more you will be able to watch the movement of an opposing hitter’s arm and better identify what and where they are going to hit. A good hitter will disguise their tip by doing the same spike arm movement then slowing down their wrist movement at the very last second to tip.

Always, always call out when you see the tip to your teammates. When I play, since “tip” is such a short word I can say it 6 or 7 times before it hits the ground. I’ve learned that it takes a second for people to react to what is happening so I repeat the word over and over again so it gets in my teammates minds what is going on.

A very good way of learning to recognize when a player is going to tip is when you are “Peppering” with your partner in warm ups in practice and in games. Make sure to mix up your “attack” in Pepper so that you hit five balls then you tip, then you hit 3 balls then you tip. Mixing up the attack is mimicking what actually happens in a volleyball game. You don’t want to get into a comfortable rhythm doing your pepper. Both partners should challenge each other so neither knows what “attack” is going to come next. So ultimately, the faster you recognize when someone is going to tip…the faster you can communicate this to your teammates.

April Chapple is a former USA National Womens Volleyball Team member and Volleyball Professional who created Volleyball Voices the first virtual volleyball mentoring community for girls volleyball players and volleyball coaches with stories by champion women volleyball players and coaching volleyball articles that break up volleyball skills so females learn how to play better volleyball.

Search Engine History - The Early Years

So where did it all start? In the first of three posts on the history of the Search Engines, I look at the history of the internet itself and the forerunners to modern, web-based search engines (in the period immediately prior to the emergence of the first widely-used web browser). In this whistle-stop tour, I take Seitensprung Sachsen Anhalt now forgotten tools like Archie, Veronica and WAIS.

A brief history of the Internet

The internet is arguably the greatest invention of the 20th Century, allowing the almost limitless connection of people to each other and to the resources they seek. Whilst the invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio and computer set the stage for this communications revolution, it was a series of rapid developments in technology during the 1960s that paved the way for the creation of the internet.

The grandparents of the internet were arguably J.C.R. Licklider and Leonard Kleinrock, both at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Licklider was the first head of the computer research program at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and in August 1962 wrote a paper about a “Galactic Network” of globally interconnected computers, through which everyone could quickly access data and programs from any site. Kleinrock made this dream achievable through his work on packet switching theory (from 1961 to 1964) and the creation of the first (however small) wide-area computer network (or WAN), in 1965 (connecting a TX-2 computer in MIT to a Q-32 in California).

Kleinrock worked closely with Lawrence G. Roberts in the creation of the WAN and it was Roberts who went on to pen the design for ARPANET (the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) in late 1966, collaborating increasingly with teams from the National Physics Laboratory (NPL) in the United Kingdom and the RAND Corporation (both of whom had independently developed packet switching technologies without being aware of each other’s work).

During 1968, Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN) were selected to build ARPANET and in September 1969 the first node was installed at the University of California (UCLA). A month later, the second node was added (at Stanford Research Institute) and the first Host-to-Host message ever to be sent on the Internet was launched from UCLA. The month in which I was born!

During the period from 1970 to 1972, many computers were added to ARPANET, protocols developed and software written. In October 1972, March Ray Tomlinson at BBN developed the first email system and sent the first email (”quertyuiop”). In the following year, the first ARPANET connections outside the US were made, to NORSAR in Norway and to University College London (UCL) in the United Kingdom. For a great 1972 video documentary on ARPANET, liebe my blog.

Whilst the original ARPANET grew quickly during the 1970s, it remained mainly an academic preserve. The key next step in the development of the modern web began in 1982, with the adoption by many participants of the TCP/IP protocol, which was faster, easier to use, and less expensive to implement than earlier protocols. This in turn made it much easier for small networks to connect to the network and for those links to branch in every direction. From this point on, all networks that use TCP/IP refer to themselves as part of the Internet (rather than ARPANET) and the standardization on TCP/IP allows the number of Internet sites and users to grow exponentially.

To use an analogy, these developments created the easel but there were still precious little paints for the artist to use. Most early mass-market internet tools were overly technical in nature and difficult to use. Any of you remember terms like WAIS (wide-area search), Archie (file search), Gopher (data retrieval), Newsnet and more?

Two key tools were to change all this forever. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee and the team at CERN (the European Particle Physics Laboratory) invented the hypertext-based World Wide Web. Four years later, in 1993, the world’s first commercial-strength web-browser, Mosaic, was launched by Marc Andreesen of the National Center for SuperComputer Applications (NCSA) in the US. Tim’s original specifications for URIs, HTTP and HTML were further refined over the coming years and Andreesen went on to develop the Netscape web browser, based on the original MOSAIC kernel.

The rest, as they say, is history! Since this point, the internet has grown exponentially. According to internetworldstats.com, in December 1995, there were just 16 million internet users (0.4% of the world population) but this had grown to 361 million by December 2000 (a 2,300% increase) and 1,018 million by December 2005.

The World’s first search engines

The father and mother of the modern search engine were Archie and Veronica. Archie, developed in 1990 by Emtage, Heelan and Deutsch (students at McGill University in Montreal) was, in a sense, the world’s first search engine. Archie was a tool used to index FTP archives and allowed users to search for and find specific files. The user had to have a pretty good idea of the file name they were looking for, as Archie only indexed filenames (although wildcards were supported, which helped).

In the earliest versions of Archie, the system worked by simply running a job once a month to log-on to each of the member FTP servers and request a listing. These listings were stored in local files to be searched using the Unix grep command. Once a user had found a file in the Archie index, they had to connect to the FTP host and rummage around until they found the file they were looking for (much like the early days of Napster music file sharing nearly 10 years later). This was not for the faint-hearted and the system was only heavily used by the tech-head or academic!

The name Archie derives from the word “archive”, but became associated by users with the comic book series of the same name, created by Bob Montana (featuring the fictional teenage characters Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle and Forsythe “Jughead” Jones characters). As such, when Gopher began to take off in 1992, Foster and Barrie (at the University of Nevada) named their newly developed Gopher search engine Veronica after Archie’s comic book girlfriend. Officially, Veronica stood for “Very Easy Rodent-Oriented Net-wide Index to Computer Archives”.

Veronica was a constantly updated database of the names of almost every menu item on thousands of Gopher servers and could be searched directly from most major Gopher menus. Veronica was, technically, an improvement on Archie in that it (a) indexed the full title of a document rather than just the filename and (b) connected the user directly to the source file with a single click. What neither Archie nor Veronica did, however, was to fully index the target document. This meant that both lacked so-called “semantic ability” - i.e. the ability to connect documents with diverse titles but similar content.

In 1991, Brewster Kahle (at Thinking Machines) launched Wide Area Information Server (WAIS) at Xerox PARC. WAIS only enjoyed a brief presence on the stage of internet history. However, it could certainly be described as the first genuine forerunner to modern search engines, in the sense that it was the first to fully index all the text in Gopher and other internet documents. As Kahle put it at the time, he wanted users to be able to “jump into the middle of the scroll”. WAIS supplemented Veronica, which only searched the menu titles of Gopher sites, but was itself quickly rendered obsolete by the rapid growth of the World Wide Web (which came to replace or front-end all major FTP, Archie, Gopher and WAIS properties).

Comment

At time of writing, internet sales are approximately 15% of all sales in the UK (having risen by 50% over the last year). The numbers are higher still in North America. U-Switch predict 40% of all sales will be over the internet by 2020 and Google is now the world’s number one ranked brand; not bad for a business less than ten years old! Sometimes it seems incredible to me that so much has happened so quickly. My reasons for writing this series of articles is, in part, to pay testimony to those early internet and search pioneers, lest we forget their vital contributions.

In part two of the series, on my blog, I review web search before Google came to dominate; looking at the first web crawler, WWW Wanderer, and early pioneers like Altavista and Northern Light.

Dating Tips For Guys To Keep The Relationship Fun And Interesting

We have seen guys make some horrible mistakes when dating - ones that ruin the whole thing? Sometimes they lose a great girl over something that could have been easily prevented. Here are some things to do that many guys seem to neglect.

Keep the relationship FUN. Dating should be fun, I honestly believe that. Always make sure that she is Seitensprung Sachsen your company and she will love you for it. Joke with her, tease her, and keep that smile on her face. When the fun stops it’s like the relationship gets cancer…it starts to deteriorate slowly until one day it just dies. Do not let this happen, keep things interesting at the time. Think outside the box, listen to her and make sure she is always smiling.

Don’t get into a routine of going to the same place every time you sex out. Try new things and new places. Try different restaurants, walk beach at night, or pull the ultimate surprise and cook dinner for her. If you keep mixing things up it will be a constant thrill for her to be dating you and it will make the relationship much more fun and enjoyable.

We found that one of the biggest problems with dating, especially for young couples, is communication. So avoid that and encourage her to share what’s on her mind. If she tells you something that you do not like, avoid turning it into an argument. Instead discuss it and resolve it. Becoming angry and arguing will cut the lines of communication and this most of the time leads to the destruction of the relationship.
